With the cost of energy continuing to increase, power companies raising rates, natural gas, fuel oil and gas prices continuing to rise, people are seriously starting to look at alternative methods of powering their homes and their lives. Solar energy is certainly an alternative however there are still drawbacks and limitations to using solar energy as a solution. Wind turbines are also an alternative and possibly an even better solution than solar. So can you really take advantage of wind power in your home?

How Wind Turbines Work

A wind turbine is actually a fairly simple device. If you’ve ever had anything with an electric motor on it like one of those toy hand held fans, you know that if you push electricity through the motor it’ll turn the fan blades but what most people don’t realize is that if you spin the fan blades with your hand, you’re actually creating electricity. This is a result of spinning copper wire around a magnet which excites electrons that creates a current. While the electricity created with a small hand held fan is minute, when you multiply the size of that tiny motor a thousand times, and add fan blades a thousand times larger, then you’ve got a wind turbine capable of producing significant amounts of electricity.

Can You Use Both Solar And Wind?

Solar panels and wind turbines enable you to have power in places where electricity simply isn’t available. Remote locations and isolated areas far from a normal power grid benefit the most from these alternative energy sources. However, neither of these solutions is inexpensive and there are drawbacks to both. The main drawbacks to solar are the panels themselves as you be in an area that gets a lot of sunlight and you have to keep in mind how much debris and wind your area gets. While solar panels are fairly tough, if you live in an area that gets hail or where wind storms creates a lot of damage, as large as solar panels have to be, you may be asking for major problems.

How Much Of An Investment Is There?

Wind turbines only rely on the wind to produce electricity. They’re virtually weather proof and as the wind speed increases the more electricity they’ll produce. The essential drawback to a turbine capable of producing enough power for a home is the cost. While solar energy systems will run in the $20,000 to $30,000 range, wind turbines that generate the same amount of power will cost about $15,000 more. While both systems will eventually pay for themselves, much faster if you convert anything using a fossil fuel to electricity, including your vehicles, there is still a substantial investment that has to be made.
